Basket for carpet
Hand-woven basket for carpet
If you are looking for a basket for carpets, clothes, toys, magazines or something else, you will find a lot of beautiful hand-woven baskets at Manelleh. The baskets are handmade using a traditional braiding technique. They are braided from jute and hand-stitched with jute thread. They are produced under proper working conditions and based on global fair trade principles and have taken between half and a full day to braid. When you buy a jute basket from Manelleh, you help preserve an old craft tradition and support marginalized women in Bangladesh.
Sustainable material
A basket for carpet, clothes or magazines from Manelleh is made of jute. Jute is a good choice for a sustainable material, because the jute plant only requires very little water, primarily rainwater and possibly a little fertilizer to be cultivated. The fibers from the jute are extracted from the bark of the jute plant and go through an extensive processing process before it becomes a finished jute product. The jute plant is common in India and Bangladesh, and the fiber is called "The Golden Fiber", because of its shiny golden color.
Traditional craftsmanship
If you choose a basket for carpets, clothes, toys or magazines, you are also supporting an old craft tradition. For centuries, crafts have been made by locals including e.g. basket weaving, has been a strong tradition in the rural areas of Bangladesh. It can take a woman from a few hours to several days to weave a basket, depending on the basket's sizes and details. The old craft tradition helps to contribute to local employment. At the same time, the role helps to maintain the economy and culture in rural areas.
A special basket for carpet, clothes or magazines
When you buy a basket for blankets, clothes, toys, magazines or other things, you are helping to ensure proper, meaningful and dignified jobs for marginalized women in Bangladesh. The women work at a socially responsible company, Bunon Kutir, where they receive a fair salary and professional training. Bunon Kutir works (like our other good collaborators in Bangladesh, Tarango
and Saidpur) on becoming an approved member of the World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO), which audits and guarantees that the organization is a socially responsible workplace.
