Handmade products
At Manelleh, we focus on craft traditions. All products are made by small social fair trade companies, and the women receive professional training in hand-making unique and personal products.
From generation to generation
Kantha broderi
At Manelleh, we love the kantha tradition and its history. Kantha is a centuries-old way of sewing or embroidery and originally originates from Bangladesh and India.
Originally, the women took their old clothes and sewed them together to make warm blankets for the winter. Today, the Kantha rug is used as, for example, a throw or bedspread. The beautiful colors and patterns make them into small unique works of art, which are used as beautiful decoration in the home.
Finally, the kantha tradition is very meaningful because it is about giving new life to something old.
Source of income in rural areas
Basket braiding
At Manelleh, we are very enthusiastic about traditional basket weaving.
For centuries, crafts made by local e.g. basket weaving, has been a strong tradition in the rural areas of Bangladesh. It can take a woman a whole day to weave a basket (for storage, for example).
This craft tradition helps to contribute to local employment. At the same time, this task also helps to maintain the economy and culture in the rural areas.
Materials
We collect products that harm the environment as little as possible
We prefer to work with upcycled, recycled and organic materials because it damages the environment far less than new and conventional products.
New life to vintage sarees
Upcycling of colorful silk and cotton sarees
At Manelleh, we love to upcycle beautiful saris and transform them into new, unique products.
A sari is a piece of cloth that has traditionally been worn by women in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Nepal. It can be an heirloom passed down from generation to generation and used on special occasions or a garment worn every day.
A sari can be worn in different ways depending on the country, regions and traditions. It is available in an endless range of colors and patterns. Materials include cotton, silk and other fibers.
The golden fiber
Jute
At Manelleh, we sell jute products because jute is a good choice for an environmentally friendly material.
The fibers from jute are extracted from the bark of the jute plant and require very little water, primarily rainwater and possibly a little fertilizer to be cultivated. The fiber goes through an extensive processing process before it becomes a finished jute product.
The jute plant is common in India and Bangladesh, and the fiber is also called "The Golden Fiber", due to its shiny golden color.
The Global Organic Textile Standard
Organic cotton
We always strive to choose GOTS certified organic cotton for our products. We do this to ensure that the cotton used for our products really is sustainable. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the most recognized global standard for the processing of organic fibers.
The standard is supported by an independent third-party certification and is a guarantee of compliance with a wide range of environmental and social criteria throughout the supply chain. Textiles that are GOTS certified must contain a minimum of 70% certified organic fibres.
